Do I need to register to use a JAN code?
Selling products with your own JAN codes requires registering a company prefix with GS1 Japan. This tool only renders the barcode symbol — it does not replace registration.
What is the check digit?
The last digit, calculated from the other 12 to catch reading errors. Enter 12 digits and it is added automatically; enter 13 and it is verified.
What do Japanese JAN codes start with?
Japanese JAN codes are 13 digits starting with 45 or 49. Codes from other countries can also be rendered as EAN-13.
How can I be sure it will scan?
Print a sample at the real size and test it with an actual scanner or phone app before production use. The SVG version stays sharp at any size.
