FAQ
What share of gross pay is take-home in Japan?
With no dependants and under age 40, take-home is typically about 75–82% of gross. Higher salaries face higher income-tax rates, so the share falls slightly.
Is this calculation exact?
It is an estimate. Health insurance uses the Kyokai Kenpo Tokyo rates for 2025 and treats your standard monthly remuneration as equal to your salary. Actual amounts vary by prefecture, company health plan, deductions and last year's income (for resident tax). Check your payslip or withholding slip for exact figures.
Why is resident tax deducted from salary?
Resident tax is charged on the previous year's income and withheld from salary from June to the following May. New employees often pay none in their first year.
Are bonuses included?
