What is a VPS?
A VPS (virtual private server) is a service that splits one physical server into virtual pieces, each usable like an independent server. It offers more freedom than shared hosting and costs less than a dedicated server — a middle option used for everything from company sites to development environments.
But the numbers in a plan table alone do not tell you whether a VPS is good. Look at these five points.
Point 1: Work backwards from the use case for CPU and memory
For a small company site or blog, 1–2 cores / 1–2 GB is often enough, while a busy e-commerce site or several WordPress sites are safer with 2–4 GB. Choose a service that lets you scale up later, and you avoid paying for a bigger plan from the start.
Point 2: For storage, the type matters more than the size
Even at the same 100 GB, HDD, SSD and NVMe feel completely different in speed. On database-driven sites such as WordPress, storage speed translates directly into page speed. Check whether it is SSD/NVMe instead of just how large it is.
Point 3: Data center location
If your users are in Japan, placing the server in Japan (ideally Tokyo) is an advantage. The closer it is, the faster the response (ping) and the sooner pages start rendering. A cheap overseas VPS can cost you more in speed than it saves in price. You can measure your own site's speed with our free tools.
Point 4: OS and ease of management
- Are the OS images you want (Ubuntu / Debian / AlmaLinux, etc.) available?
- Can you reboot, reinstall and take snapshots from a control panel?
- Does it support IPv6? (It will become essential.)
Point 5: Lock-ins and the total price
A low monthly price can still end up expensive with minimum terms, cancellation fees and setup fees. Check not just the 'from ¥X/month' headline but setup fees, lock-ins and renewal prices. A service with no lock-in that you can use month to month is also easy to leave if it does not fit.
Summary
To choose a VPS without regrets, go in this order: specs from the use case → storage type → location → ease of management → total price. MOKLAV's VPS plans run in a Tokyo data center, from ¥550/month with no lock-in. Start small and grow — that is our recommendation.
